CV Tips

Create a standout CV

Creating a standout CV as a graduate is crucial for landing your first job.

Here are some tips to help you craft an impressive CV that effectively showcases your skills and experiences.

Tailor your CV to the job

Customise your CV for each job application. Highlight skills, experiences, and achievements relevant to the specific job description. Begin with a compelling summary or objective statement that briefly highlights your skills, experiences, and career goals and tailors them to the role you are applying for. Use industry-specific keywords throughout your CV to grab the attention of hiring managers.

Professional Formatting

Keep your CV clean, organised, and easy to read. Use a professional font and maintain consistent formatting throughout. Aim for a one-page to 2-page CV. Be selective with the information you include and focus on quality over quantity.

Education Section

As a recent graduate, your education section is vital. Include your degree, university name, graduation date, and any relevant academic achievements and key modules. Where possible, quantify your achievements with grades and percentages.

Relevant Experience

If you have work experience, include it, most recent first. Focus on internships, part-time jobs, volunteer work, or projects that demonstrate relevant skills and accomplishments.

Skills Section

Highlight key skills that are relevant to the job you’re applying for. Include technical skills, soft skills, languages, and any certifications or licenses.

Projects and Extracurricular Activities

Showcase any relevant projects, research, or extracurricular activities that demonstrate your skills, passion, and initiative.

Proofread Thoroughly

Avoid typos, grammar mistakes, or formatting errors by proofreading your CV multiple times. Consider asking a friend or mentor to review it as well.

Online Presence

Ensure your online presence is consistent with your CV. Update your LinkedIn profile and remove any unprofessional content from social media accounts.

Interview Tips and Advice

Enhance your interview skills and approach with confidence.

Interviews can be a daunting experience but with the right preparation you are more likely to be your best and feel more confident.

Our interview tips to help you navigate the process with ease

Research the company

Research the company and the role before interviewing to make sure you have a clear understanding of what they do, including their values, products and services.

This information can be found on the company website, job description, media and news.

Dress the Part

Dress professionally and appropriately for the interview. Even if the company has a casual dress code, it’s better to be slightly overdressed than underdressed. First impressions matter!

Arrive Early

Plan to arrive at least 10-15 minutes early for your interview. This gives you time to relax, collect your thoughts, and mentally prepare for the conversation.

Ask Intelligent Questions

Prepare insightful questions to ask the interviewer about the company, the team, or the specific role. This demonstrates your interest and engagement in the opportunity.

Be Engaged and Enthusiastic

Show genuine enthusiasm for the opportunity and the company. Smile, make eye contact, and engage actively in the conversation. Let your passion and interest shine through!

Showcase Your Skills & Experience

Be ready to discuss specific examples of how you’ve demonstrated key skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, leadership, and communication. Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure your responses. Highlight any internships, research projects, or industry-related experience you have. Discuss what you learned and how it has prepared you for the role you’re applying for.

Communicate Effectively

Clear communication is key, especially when discussing technical topics. Practice explaining complex concepts in simple terms, and be prepared to articulate your ideas clearly and confidently.

Follow Up Afterwards

Send a thank-you email expressing your appreciation for the opportunity to chat and reiterate your interest in the position or company.
